Some
images on this page and throughout this website are from my favorite
archival and historical sewing books, and they are also in the public
domain for viewing anytime and looking into the past via a needle
and thread. They also show that the basics still apply in modern
sewing.
- Embroidery
and Tapestry Weaving by Grace Christie, 1912.
- Handbook
of Embroidery by L. Higgin, 1880.
- Jacobean
Embroidery by Ada Wentworth Fitzwilliam and A. F. Morris Hands,
1912.
- The
Ladies' Work-Table Book by Anonymous, 1844.

Textiles
and Fabrics

When
you choose a fabric for a pattern, whether it's for a jacket, dress
or bedskirt, the key is to choose one that is appropriate for the project.
Not only will knowing what a fabric is made of help you in choosing
the correct one, it will give you clues on the care and construction
of the piece. If a 'cotton' fabric is needed, there is a big difference
in textures found. Wovens and interlock types are available and if you're
wanting to construct something with your own pattern or if you are constructing using draping, learning the differences
in textiles and fabrics will save you time and money.
Here
are my favorite links on textiles, sewing with them, and the care and
restoration to keep them looking their best.
