Glossary
of Hand Sewing Terms
Some of the Hand Sewing terms used on this site and
others may seem foreign at first, but knowing the following Hand Sewing
Lingo makes it easy to read up on the subject.
Bar
Tacks:
This is a hand sewing way to mark on fabric which is too delicate to be
marked by other methods. I find this is a great way to mark my finer tailoring
projects: they can be removed without brushing, wetting or ironing as
is the case with certain marking tools like pens, pencils and chalks.
You make these by looping thread at precise marks through the pattern
paper onto the fabric, gently pulling apart then snipping the loops. The
resulting "marks" are just the leftover bits of thread remaining
from the loops which can be easily removed. Be sure to use thread that
is not going to transfer on the finer fabrics and/or that will not mar
the fabric, for example, I like to use silk or rayon thread when using
wool fabrics.
Whip
Stitch: Hand
sewing technique, used to quickly finish raw edging, and can be used to
sew on snaps.
